Sharing God's Light through Mission Support

Think back to a time when you really needed God's help. Did you find God's love through the care given by another person?

God's love comes in many forms and those who experienced that love want to share it with others.

The ministry of the Mission Committee is to connect those who have been blessed by God with those who need God's blessings.

We invite you to explore the many ways in which Shepherd of the Hills United Methodist Church serves others, and prayerfully decide where God may be calling you to become involved.

Find your path for serving God by serving others.

So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. ----John 13:14

Shepherd of the Hills Mission Projects

Financial Support

Budgeted Giving-Every year we identify several mission priorities that we support through our church budget. This is our way of emphasizing the importance of giving to others.

Communion Offerings-Second Mile Giving-9 months during the year a flyer is put in the church bulletin on communion weekends. The gifts given are used to support 12 mission priorities of The Desert Southwest Conference of The United Methodist Church

Holiday Offerings-Second Mile Giving-At Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter we receive a special offering which is then sent directly to support mission ministries that bring healing to those who need it. Some of the places supported by our Holiday Offerings in the past are:

  • Interfaith Community Care
  • Wesley Community Center
  • United Methodist Outreach Ministries (UMOM)
  • United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR)
  • NOMADS
  • Red Bird Mission
  • Native American Ministries in Page, AZ
  • Give Ye Them to Eat
  • Meal Makers for the Homeless

On-Going Projects

First Sunday Food Collection-The first weekend of the month you may bring canned food items to the church. There are boxes located outside the narthex doors to collect non-perishable food items. The following Monday members of The United Methodist Men deliver the food to the Westside Food Bank.

Meal Makers-On Wednesdays at 11:30 AM we gather in the fellowship hall to make sandwiches which are then taken to UMOM to serve at their overflow shelter for the homeless. We can always use help making sandwiches. Those who bake may wish to drop off home-baked cookies in the kitchen to be sent to the shelter as well. This ministry serves November-March.

Westside Food Bank-On the 2nd Monday of the month at 7:15 AM we meet in the church parking lot to go by bus to the Westside Food Bank. Once there we pack food boxes that are then given out during the week.

Summer Projects

During the summer we seek to be a blessing by collecting items for others.

One month we collect toiletry items which are then donated to United Methodist Outreach Ministries.

One month we collect Back-to-School items which are given to Wesley Community Center to distribute to the children.

Christmas Projects

UMOM Christmas Gift Cards-If you need a gift for the person who has everything, this gift card provides for those who have nothing. When you purchase a UMOM Gift Card your donation helps to provide a night's housing for families with no home.

Sock Tree for UMOM-During the month of December we have several small Christmas trees in the lobby of the church. You may help us decorate them by adding a new pair of socks, which are then given to help those whose feet would be cold without your gift. All of the socks collected are given to UMOM to distribute.

The Mission Team is prayerfully looking at ways to expand our outreach.
