EDUCATION COMMITTEE TOUR:

NISHKAM SEVA SIKH TEMPLE

As the world continues to get smaller, it is necessary to learn about other cultures, religions, and customs.  An opportunity will be presented to SHUMC members and friends on Saturday, September 25, 2010, when an All-Aboard America bus will arrive at the SHUMC parking lot at 9:00 AM.  The bus will depart at 9:15 AM and go to the NISHKAM SEVA SIKH TEMPLE at 4950 W Tonopah Drive in Glendale.  Most of you have seen the beautiful, gold domes of this temple as you travel along 101, and the facilities are exceptional.  The schedule includes a tour and explanation of the Sikh faith and an Indian lunch.  The only cost is $15.00 for transportation.
You are invited to join this exciting trip, and you can signup at the church office during business hours or before church September 5, 12, and 19.  Remember:  Saturday, September 25, 9:00 AM SHUMC parking lot, 10:00 AM tour of Nishkam Seva Sikh Temple, noon Indian lunch, and return to SHUMC 2:30-3:00 PM.  It will be fun to share this experience with you and your friends.

IMMIGRATION ISSUES AND REFORM

SHUMC will host Jim Perdue Burke, a missionary for Immigration and Border Ministry in the Desert Southwest Conference of the United Methodist Church.  The sessions will be held Wednesdays, October 13 and 20, in the Sanctuary from 3:00 - 4:30 PM.  To prepare for this presentation, you need to consider the following questions, as well as questions you have:
   -   What are our responsibilities as Christians?
   -   Are there topics that are not a part of our concern that we do not need to approach with a faith perspective?
   -   Should anything with political connotation be part of our Christian concern or part of a Christian dialogue?
This forum is open to the public and free of charge.  There will be plenty of time for questions and answers.

  New Orleans Partner Church

Most people tend to thing New Orleans is up and running again and the reality is in the poorer 9th Ward, many families are dependent upon volunteer labor to help get their lives and homes back in order.

Shepherd of the Hills has become a partner with Cornerstone UMC in New Orleans. It is our goal to support this congregation in their efforts to be in ministry to their community. Our church has already sent them a portion of two holiday offerings to help them build their children's playground and we sent gifts for their children at Easter. We also sent Easter cards for every family at Cornerstone. In May, two of us went to survey the area and see what our church might be able to do to assist them.

It is our dream to be able to send a work team to New Orleans this next spring. We have a few people who have volunteered to be part of the planning team. We would welcome a few more. The scope of work we would do would depend upon our abilities. There is so much that needs to be done that it will be easy to design work around what we are able to do.

So this is what you can do:

1. Be in prayer as we continue to discover ways to support Cornerstone UMC and the people of the 9th Ward. Volunteer to be part of a team to plan a work trip (contact Rev. Susan at 623-584-2280 or by email: associatepastor@shepherdofthehills.org

2. Donate your frequent flyer miles. They will help us travel to New Orleans next spring.

3. Think about what you might be able to do to help.

In a Sun City Church I took a group to New Mexico to work. One woman said she couldn't do the labor we were doing there, but she could cook - so she went along and prepared all of our meals. It was a real blessing.

All across our country people are in need of God's love and our help. A work trip is something we can do to Make God's Love Real. - Rev. Susan Brimms
