History and Growth

Our Church reached an historic milestone in 2004 when we celebrated the 25th anniversary of its first worship service held December 2, 1979 in the Johnson Social Hall in Sun City West. The founding members had no building of their own,  but they did have a CHURCH!

Over the years, we have been on an exciting journey as we have dedicated our presence, prayers, service and gifts to the Glory of God, and with His guidance, have built the beautiful and inspiring Campus we have today. Vastly more than bricks and mortar, though, Shepherd of the Hills is the spiritual center of the lives of our members.

Plans to establish a United Methodist Church in Sun City West, Arizona began just a few months after the first residents moved into the new Del Webb retirement community in late 1978. Shepherd of the Hills U.M.C. was formally organized in December 1979, with Worship Services held for several years in the community's Social Hall.     Land for our new Church building became available in 1982 and the present site was purchased that December. Following a successful Building Fund Campaign, ground was broken on Easter Sunday, 1984. The Service of Consecration for the new Church building was held in January 1986.

Further expansion of our facilities occurred in late 1993 with the completion of a new 14,000 square foot Fellowship Hall; a new and larger Choir Rehearsal Room; and additional staff offices and meeting rooms. A Columbarium and Scattering Garden were added a short time later.

In late 2002, a free-standing Chapel was added to the Church Campus.

Our current membership is under 1400.
